Web Site Designer and Manager - 1995 to 2001
On my advice John Black, a businessman I was acquainted with, purchased a server/workstation system. I then advised him on the various capabilities of the World Wide Web on the Internet. Between us we determined that there was a viable business opportunity. He then engaged me to develop a strategy and implement it.

We decided on a directory consisting of a selection of business categories throughout the Caribbean. In consultation with me he purchased over 600 domain names associated with the Caribbean and in excess of 1200 other names for future projects.

I implemented the business directory using HTML, DHTML and Java. This 1400+ page site, including businesses in 32 countries, generated in excess of 100,000 hits per day once deployed on the ?net as ?Caribbean Online?.

A high level of interest and activity on the site worldwide produced a regular stream of correspondence from users. They kept us on up to date with information for individual listings.

We were able to sell the organization to a venture capital firm for several million dollars and at that point I was able to turn operation of the site over to the new owners.

Owner/Operator - Custom Computer Sales and Service - 1988 to 1995

With a very small capital investment I started a storefront operation to consult on and assemble custom desktop computers. I was able to develop a clientele that I maintained throughout a seven-year period, which continued until I discovered the opportunity described above.

Some of the companies that I built and serviced computers for were:
  • Thorsteinssons, a large legal firm in downtown Vancouver;
  • Peacock, suppliers of pump parts;
  • Western Regional office for Racal-Decca in Vancouver.

Sales Manager - 1984 to 1988

I was hired originally as a service technician with my main duty being "Get line 1!". That meant I was to answer the main telephone line that was used for customer inquiries.

Due to the skill with which I helped clients on the phone and in the store I soon became the company's main source of sales. When the level of sales generated required the hiring of three additional sales people, and two new technicians, I became the Sales Manager.

With that increase in sales activity, we soon outgrew the premises we were in. Upon relocating we became the largest computer store in Vancouver.

As Sales Manager I trained the new staff. To make the job easier I developed procedures and the necessary software to manage sales estimation and invoicing using the, then new, Microsoft Office Suite.
